Musculoskeletal System

Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system consists of the bones and the skeletal muscles, tendons and ligaments that interact with them to produce your body's movement. This system's parts are more likely to be affected by injury than by disease because they are subjected to constant wear and tear. Bone strength and structure can be weakened by hormonal and other disorders, particularly in older people; some inflammatory joint disorders can occur at any age.

Listed below is a brief description for each of the conditions in the Musculoskeletal System category. To get mored detailed information including symptoms, causes and treatments, click on the condition's name.

Alternatively, our Conditions Listed Alphabetically page has all conditions listed in alphabetical order.

Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, usually accompanied by pain, stiffness, swelling, loss of function and over time, changes in structure. Arthritis is associated with many diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus erythematosus, Lyme disease, psoriasis, scleroderma, Reiter's syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, and ankylosing spondylitis. Bone Fractures

How a bone breaks depends on the direction and degree of force to which it is subjected. fractures range from minor surface cracks, known as fissures, to complete breaks through the bone. If a broken bone remains beneath the skin the gracture is described as closed (simple). If the ends of broken bones project through the skin, the fracture is described as open (compound).

Some parts of the skeleton are more vulnerable to fracture than others, although the risk of breaking a particular bone can be affected by a person's age and lifestyle. In older people, the bones are more fragile and more likely to break; a common site of fracture in an older person is the femur (thigh bone). Fractures of the ankle or collar bone often occur in young people who take part in active sports. More details ...

Fibromyalgia (formerly fibrositis)

Fibromyalgia (formerly fibrositis) is a syndrome characterized by chronic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of muscles, tendons, and joints without detectable inflammation. It is also characterized by restless sleep, awakening tired, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and disturbances in bowel function. The condition is non-life-threatening and does not cause body damage or deformity.

Fibromyalgia is considered a muscle condition. It is not a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) because it does not cause inflammation in the joints. But fibromyalgia can (like arthritis) cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can similarly interfere with a person's ability to carry on daily activities.

Fibromyalgia is seen in about 2% of the general population. It predominantly affects women (more than 80%) between the ages of 35 and 55. Less commonly, fibromyalgia affects men, children, and the elderly. It can occur independently or can be associated with another rheumatic disease, such as systemic lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
